Interior painting starts with the room, not the wall. Alexis covers the floors, the furniture that cannot be moved out, and any fixtures with paper and plastic before a can of paint is opened. Baseboards, outlet covers and door hardware get taped off so the edges stay sharp. He cuts in along the ceiling line, into corners and around trim with a brush first, then rolls the flat parts of the wall so the texture matches from edge to edge. Ceilings get painted separately from the walls, usually in a flat white that hides settling lines instead of drawing attention to them. Darker colors and color changes usually need a second coat to cover evenly, especially over a wall that used to be a different shade. Hallways and stairwells get the same care as any other room, even where reaching the top of a tall stairwell wall means working carefully off a ladder instead of a short step stool. Doors and closets get painted along with the room around them, not left for later.
